Wait Until Dark
Frederick Knott’s thriller is the story of Susy Hendrix, a recently blinded housewife who unwittingly possesses a doll filled with illicit drugs. Harry Roat, a brutal and sophisticated criminal, coerces two small-time thugs into helping him con Susy into giving up the doll. A battle of wits ensues as Susy and the young girl upstairs launch a counterplot against the thieves.

Characters

Susy Hendrix (Lead, 20s-30s): A recently blinded woman who lost her sight in a car accident. She is highly intelligent, intuitive, and vivacious, refusing to let her handicap ruin her life. Susy is resourceful and fierce, turning her sightless world into a trap for the criminals.

Harry Roat (Lead, 40-55): A cold, calculating, and sadistic criminal mastermind who uses disguises and terror to manipulate Susy. He is violent and willing to kill anyone, including his associates, to get what he wants.

Mike Talman (Supporting, 30s-40s): A charming but cynical ex-convict who is one of the con men trying to trick Susy. He still has some conscience left, which often conflicts with the brutality of Roat.

Sgt. Carlino (Supporting, 30s-50s): An ex-convict and smaller-time grifter who assists Roat, often masquerading as a police officer. He is coarse, uneducated, and easily frustrated.

Gloria (Supporting, 12-13): A young girl living in the apartment upstairs. She is often lonely and acts out, but becomes a vital ally to Susy, helping her outwit the criminals.

Sam Hendrix (Supporting, 30-40): Susy’s husband, a professional photographer and ex-marine. He is protective and loving, encouraging Susy’s independence, but is lured away by the crooks to leave her alone.
